As I complete my time as Chair of the Scottish Race Equality Forum, I want to share both a reflection and an invitation. SREF has always been more than a committee. It was created by BMA Scotland in 2021 to provide a safe and supportive space for doctors and medical students from ethnic minority backgrounds, and to act as a collective voice for change. Since its beginning, it has been built on courage, solidarity and the determination to challenge injustice in all its forms.
Our purpose
SREF exists to confront systemic and institutional racism in the NHS and in medical education. We want to create workplaces and learning environments where ethnic minority doctors and students are empowered to speak up and to be heard. We work in partnership with medical schools, employers and policymakers to make accountability real and to ensure that equality is more than just a statement of intent. We promote education, awareness and practical steps that make inclusion part of everyday working life.
Our work
Earlier this year we published the Report of BMA Scotland’s Race Equality in Medicine Survey. The findings were stark. They spoke of racism, exclusion and barriers to careers that should never have a place in our NHS or medical schools. That report called for urgent action, and it will continue to shape the work of the forum in the year ahead as we hold organisations to account and push for the change that is needed.
How we meet
SREF usually meets three to four times each year, mostly on Microsoft Teams. Meetings are scheduled at different times to fit around busy clinical, academic and personal lives. The first meeting of the new session will be held on Friday 3 October. Between meetings, we keep in touch and share ideas through our list server discussion group.
An invitation
We are now preparing for the 2025–26 session, and this is your opportunity to put yourself forward. If you are a current BMA member based in Scotland and would like to join the forum, please contact Mhairi at MWeatherston@bma.org.uk . I would also encourage you to share this invitation with colleagues and peers who may be interested.
A final reflection
As I hand over, I want to encourage every BMA member in Scotland who has felt the weight of injustice and who carries a determination to make things better to step forward. Your insights and your experiences will be vital to shaping the future of this forum. You will not be alone. You will be part of a group that stands together, that listens deeply, and that works collectively for change.
This forum has shown what can be achieved when people act with courage and integrity. I believe its greatest work lies ahead. I hope you will join and add your voice to this journey.
